For more than a century, the IBEW Local 11 led the charge in the Greater Los Angeles region to represent electrical workers. As one of the oldest charters, being forged only two years after the birth of the National (soon to be International) Brotherhood of Electrical Worker, Local 11 set the highest standards for training, safety, wages, benefits, retirement, and overall dignity of the brother and sisters who literally brought light to Los Angeles. As our understanding and application of electrical work evolved, our predecessors saw the need for their union to evolve as well. The booming sectors of what will become one of the biggest cities in the country demanded specialized representation.
1953
The country was in an economic boom post WWII. Hollywood was already known worldwide and the Local 40 was already supporting electricians since 1923. That left industrial and aerospace electricians wanting for a more exclusive union of their own. In 1953 the Local 2295 was born as the United States left the Industrial Revolution and entered the Modern Age. Aerospace was, literally and figuratively, taking off in Long Beach and Mojave. Modern factories were sprouting up all across Los Angeles County. These industries demanded the next generation of electrical workers. These workers demanded the next generation of the IBEW. The Local 2295 delivered.
2025
The Local 2295 has had a hand in everything from being at the forefront of industrial manufacturing, to building the planes that made the world more accessible, to sending us to the stars. This golden era was however not sustainable and the Local had become complacent by the year 2000. Unions had come under attack by laws seeking to undermine them entirely. These laws were lobbied and funded by the very companies who enjoyed the fruits of our labors. Through globalization, mergers, and consolidation, our industries were evolving with the intention of rewarding shareholders. Our Local was not keeping up, but that stops now. Under new leadership, the IBEW Local 2295 is in for the fight of its life. The evolution of our Local will require breaking from complacency, protecting our brothers and sisters from modern economic obstacles, and returning to them the dignity and security they have rightfully earned on and off the clock. The future will be bright for 2295.
